I love film cameras! Getting your film back and not knowing what you're getting, finding those accidental overlaps and stains and splotches that unintentionally made your photos into art...ah nothing can beat film! So have some pictures I've taken with it!

Clyde tells you how to take an "attractive" Myspace picture
So yesterday Vinyl was out in the hallway, innocently taking our press pass photos, when an idea struck us. A lovely yet terrible idea. We decided to take our press pass photos as...Myspace pictures.
Yes.
Taking Myspace pictures is a complex art and I have heard it takes many years for the 12 year olds who take them to master the art. However, back in the day of 2008 when I myself was 12, I was quite the cool Myspace photo-taker myself. Not quite a master, but dang I could rock that peace sign and too much eyeliner look. Fo real.
Anyway, I decided to share my tips with you even though it's now 2011 and pretty much no one has a Myspace anymore. So, here is how to take a "cool" Myspace picture...whatever that means.
1.) Find a place with good light and nice scenery for the background. The preferred place for hip Myspacers is usually their bathroom. Because nothing expresses the complexity of your soul quite like a toilet hangin' out in the back of your profile picture.
2.) Put on some makeup. Some frequently used looks include raccoon eyes, zombie stitches on your cheeks, duct tape across the mouth, and fake fangs. Don't forget to tease your hair and color it with marker because your parents won't let you actually dye it because you are 12.
3.) Position the camera. You want an angle that will give away just enough of your face while still looking "mysterious" and "deep". And also make your head look enormous. Try holding it at arms length above your head. This will make you look like a deranged but adorable alien and also make you look abnormally thin.
4.) Hide your face. Use your overly long emo bangs, a hand, or even a flower held inexplicably up to your eye. Holding random objects up to your eyes shows how "unique" and "interesting" you are and will also help you hide the face you're probably self conscious about if you're taking Myspace pictures in the first place.
5.) Upload and edit. After you've got approximately 465 copies of the same shot with slightly shifted angles, upload to your computer and Photoshop the heck out of those suckers. Up the exposure so that it looks like you have no nose. Change it to black and white to make you look EVEN MORE "deep" and "sensitive". Make your eyes red so that everyone thinks you're a vampire with a tortured soul. Who is 12.
So there, now you have it! Now you can go out into the world and take tons of pictures of your emo self! Enjoy!

Clyde defends Ke$ha
Yes, it is true. I, Clyde, have a secret. Okay, fine, it's completely the opposite of a secret because I'm pretty sure anyone reading this already knows, but whatever. It still feels like a secret because of the overwhelming amount of SHAME I feel whenever I mention it to anyone.
I, Clyde, like Ke$ha. Yes, it is true. And no, I do not mean I just find one or two of her songs a little catchy or fun to dance to. I mean, I LIKE KE$HA. Really and truly. I think all of her songs are genius and her music videos are hilarious and she just might be my spirit animal if that spot wasn't already taken by Lucius Malfoy.
Let's face it though, Ke$ha will never quite be QUALITY MUSIC. You can tell this from the dollar sign in her name. And how many times she says "slut" in a single album. However, she does write all her own songs and she did work her way up from being dirt poor to the top of the charts. You gotta respect that, yo. And, anyway, not all her songs are mindless crap like everyone seems to think. Okay, they kind of are, but from songs like "Stephen", you can tell that she doesn't take herself seriously and seems to be making fun of herself most of the time. And, have you seen the music video for "Blow"? Prime Minister of Uzbeckistan and making out with unicorns and munster cheese? Now that is some quality comedy right thar.

Clyde loves me some summer
However, being a music- and clothes-loving teenager living in the music and clothes paradise that is Austin, I am almost constantly completely broke. This is bad in the summer since I usually, you know, like to actually...do stuff. But, after many summers of exploring, I've learned that there are some things you can do in this city that are fun and free or at least cheap. So...HOW TO PARTY FOR LESS THAN $5!
Karaoke:
Yes. Karaoke. Specifically, Korean karaoke. Basically you get to rent a room for a few hours with your friends and then you can sing as many cheesy, horrid songs as you want. You can bring food and drinks in with you and they don't even get mad at you if you happen to break a lightbulb with your horrible voice. Not that I would know anything about that particular situation, I've just, you know, heard stuff. These places are almost always super-skeezy and my favorite place, New Seoul, has some super sketchy props included in their karaoke rooms, including a mattress and an inexplicable pair of reading glasses.
Cost: $5 a person, an hour
Exploring:
I am creepy. This is a fact that cannot be doubted. Just a disclaimer, if you are not as creepy as me, you may not enjoy this activity as much as me. See, I like to go exploring in those sketchy-looking creeks that are in every neighborhood that I am pretty sure they use for drainage. If you haven't seen these, they're like tiny tunnel-like holes in the ground with rocks and water and plants in them. And, tons of graffiti. They're actually really fun (according to me at least) because I can always find interesting places to climb in them or cool graffiti to photograph or secret little nooks that look kind of jank but fascinating. Of course, if you see anyone else in the creek, you should probably run because they are probably just as creepy as you.
Cost: Free, unless you get mugged.
Movies at Deep Eddy:
So, they set up this huge screen on the opposite side of the pool, and you can watch a movie while sitting on the hill, or even better, drifting on a raft in the pool. These movies are usually for kids, but they're also super fun. You can spend all day in the park or swimming and then laze around and watch a movie in the water.
Cost: price of admission (~$2)
Burnet Road:
There are tons of places to go on Burnet that are both cheap and delicious, liiiiike Amy's Ice Creams! Or Hey Cupcake! Okay, actually those places are not that cheap, but I like to make an entire day out of it by walking there with my posse (WHICH I COMPLETELY HAVE, SHUT UP!) and taking pictures along the way or riding the bus, which is always exciting. And, if you are super broke, there is this really amazing Mexican bakery on Burnet called Mi Victoria. They have an impressive selection of pastries, cookies, and even breakfast tacos and their stuff is almost all for sale below a dollar. Like, their cookies are ten cents. I have bought two breakfast tacos, a milk, and two quite large pastries for $3.70. You guys. $3.70. I am a broke teenager, these things impress me.
Cost: ~4
So yes. I hope this helped someone...somewhere. I have many more, so if you would like a continuation, please tell me in the comments! Otherwise I will probably end up blogging about, like, How To Be A Good Stalker, or something terrible like that.
PS Besides loving me some summer, I also love me some re-posting because no one ever scrolls down to read. AYYYYYYYYYY.

Clyde's Feature Leads
Narrative:
It's a sweltering summer day on South Congress Avenue in Austin, Texas. Every time a car comes rumbling down the busy street, you want to scream in pain as the hot blast of exhaust crawls across your skin, raising the temperature around you to at least boiling. The spicy scent of Thai food from the food trailers across the street is making your eyes water and you are pretty sure even your fingernails are sunburned. Nearly blind and scrambling for shelter, you tumble into the nearest doorway. It creaks open with a tinkle of bells and suddenly you're face-to-face with a display of peacock feathers standing in a cool, dimly-lit room that smells like the sweet spices of Thanksgiving. Your sigh of relief quickly turns into a gasp as you catch sight of the racks and racks of lovely, unique vintage clothing that surround you.
Descriptive:
A tangle of antique gold necklaces clang softly against shiny mile-long strings of pearls. Old floorboards creak under scuffing footsteps. The musty smells of cinnamon and well-loved clothes fill the air, drifting on the gentle breeze that wafts in through the glass door, making the many peacock feathers scattered throughout the store wave like hands, greeting the few customers stylish enough to know of this store's existence.
Compare/Contrast (or pathetic last effort):
For some people, getting dressed is just a matter of fitting in, finding things that match (maybe) and don't look too much like you're wearing a trash bag. But, for others, it's an adventure, an opportunity to put on a costume and become someone you can only wish you were. These people are easy to spot with their sequin jackets, lace up boots, and shoulder-length feather earrings. And of course, many of them can be found at Feathers.

Clyde thinks Feathers is paradise
I, Clyde, completely ADORE vintage stores. They are lovely and unique and I can always find interesting costume-y pieces at them. Vintage clothes always have a story behind them, which just makes them that much better than normal clothes. SO I decided to FEATURE them in my FEATURE. Specifically, Feathers off of South Congress.
If you have never been to Feathers, all I have to say to you is GO. It's on Milton Street right off of South Congress, so it has that special South-Congress-y feel to it without being as crowded as, like, New Bohemia or Goodie Two Shoes on First Thursday. Every room is on a different level, so there's lots of little stairs scattered throughout the building and it has lovely creaky wood floors and always smells AMAZING. All the displays and light fixtures and shelves have been altered in some creative, artistic way and the clothes make me drool a little. So, of course I had to choose it to profile for my story.
I decided to interview the owner, Masha, and have yet to hear back from her, but when I do I will probably be PSYCHED BEYOND CONTROL.
HERE is the Feathers blog, where they post nifty pictures of merchandise and have a section where they put together sample outfits with pieces from the store called What Alex Wore. If you love clothes or costumes or just strange little Austin-y places you should totes check it out!

Strangest Children's Books EVER!
I was perusing the musty shelves of Half Price Books about a year ago when I came across a very orange, very weird book that caught my attention. On the cover, were the famed Dick and Jane, but this wasn't just any "See Spot run!" type of book. No, the title was "Yiddish With Dick and Jane".
The book teaches children such important words as "schmooze" "kvetch" and "fress". Watch as Dick schmoozes with his boss! See Dick schmooze. Schmooze, Dick, schmooze! There were clearly lots of drugs and adultery going on in this book, but none of the personality-free characters seemed to notice anything strange around them. Told in a very ironic voice, making it clear that everyone in the story seemed to be brainwashed, this book had me lollin' all day long.
Okay, so it was pretty clear that this "children's" book should not be given to any children, but it made me wonder. What kind of creepy children's books are out there? So, of course I Googled it and came up with THIS LIST and also THIS ONE, which includes such gems as "Who Cares About Disabled People?" and "Cooking with Pooh" (just think about it for a while...yeah.)
Anyway, now I am severely disturbed, so I thought I would share it with you!! You are ever so welcome.

Clyde reviews her beautiful new baby, the Canon Rebel XS
I recently acquired a brand spankin' new camera and I thought I would review it, show you some pictures I took with it and share with you how very much I love it. If you do not enjoy lengthy rants about technology that are verging on love poem-level creepiness, you might want to not read this.

So, first of all: LIGHT. This camera is just meant to make light look amazing. I mean, look at this lovely glow. Did it look like that in real life? Uh, NO.
It also makes color look really, really nice.
When the camera is on it's macro setting (It has settings for practically everything...whee!) it can get very close to the subject without blurring. This is awesome because you can take macro shots without using a special lens.
It's usually set on an automatic shutter speed to make the photos not turn out blurry, but if you put it on manual, you can control the shutter speed and take photos with interesting blurs.
The focus is easy to use, so you can focus on different subjects in your pictures and switch between background/foreground. Huzzah!
You can set it on everything from 18mm-55mm, so you can take fish eye shots or wide ones.
So, uh, yeah. Pretty freakin' amazing. I mean, there are things I don't like, like the fact that there are only three light settings: dark, normal, and bright. And...okay, actually that's it. I told you I have an affinity for it that should not be applied to inanimate objects! Oh well, now to go sit in my room, stroking it and growling to myself...

Clyde rants about Facebook "like" pages
So, Facebook has this really fantastic feature where you can "like" things that other people post, thinking that it is funny or witty or deep or some such nonsense.. This feature is so fantastic not because the people who post are successful in their quest to be interesting, but because they are so very, very unsuccessful. Not only are the names of these "like"-able things amusingly narcississtic, but THE GRAMMAR! Oh, THE GRAMMAR! For someone who is really creepily obsessed with grammar, things like this are extremely funny to read. For example:
<3 Well sad Storii <3
boi: hey wil u go out wif mii? x
gurl: i cant rite nw cos i luff sum1
boi: omg who il beat him up
I took the liberty of highlighting all the spelling and grammar mistakes for you. You are so welcome! But, there are so many MORE things wrong with this. First of all, why would the girl say she can't go out with the boy because she loves "some1" when the "some1" is HIM? And what boy says OMG? And why would he think that killing someone she loves would make her like him instead? And are the x's at the end meant to represent affection? WHY? And why is he killing himself for no reason? AND WHAT DOES IT ALL HAVE TO DO WITH TERRORISM?
Okay, I'm sure you want to read some more, so here are some of my other favorite "sad storiiis".
''SAD STORIII!!!
gurl: noo u cant cos i dnt want u hurt x
boi:h no w cos i can kil him. 4 u
gurl: den u wood kil urself 4 me :/ :/ x
boi: yea (kils himelsf)
LIKE IF U R AGANSTE TERORISMS

Lead One:Narrative
It’s become quite the cliche by now: the old grandpa waves his cane angrily, loudly proclaiming that the youngsters these days have no idear what good music really is! The malarkey they listen to nowadays is makin’ his ears bleed!
